Description: |
| | Theme ~ | | A parallel is drawn between the evictions in Cape Town’s District 6 for social & political reasons and that of the forced clearance of the Zwarte Madonna Flats in the centre of The Hague. To make use of these blank, unfinished spaces in the Zwarte Madonna, to install large colour photographs, depicting images of the "Other". The idea is to relocate one space to another, to project an image of social movement into the volatile environment of a space under reconstruction. The project is intended to have a disconcerting, perhaps even unheimlich effect upon its viewers. The size and colour quality of the images in there subject matter, media and mise en scene, making visible the inextricable links that tie the developed or so-called "first world", to the less developed or so -called "third World", exposing the inequities which are endemic to such power relations. I want to locate in The Zwarte Madonna, because it is on the nomination list to be demolished, social flats are not in the place at the high priced ground in the centre, and according the city counsel, its the only place for new government buildings in the city, so they decided that the inhabitants have to leave from this relative new building. Five years ago it was their policy that this people come and live here. It reminds me of the time I lived in South Africa, in Cape town. All inhabitant's had to leave Cross Roads. there community was demolished. After this decision, their was no money to finish their plans, to rebuild a new community. Until now this place is urban wasteland | | Sponsors ~ | Thuis Kopie Fonds, STROOM HCBK, Vrije Academie | | Technique ~ | Photo’s printed on Backlit. | | Size ~ | Backlit ~ 3300 cm x 270 cm. | | Technique ~ | Black and White graphical design in eight windows printed on linen | | Size ~ | 6x 50cm x 270cm |
